making the archon game jam dungeon arcade


This game is made primarily for Archon Game competition which is held annually here in Cebu, Philippines.

With Donde, my usual partner in game jams, we decided to join this years jam, since the theme is quite interesting and we like it.

This years theme is 'Dungeon Arcade',  based on that, we decided to create the game that has both dungeon and arcade feel to it. And so Dungeon Arcade the game is created!

First we decided what the combat should be like, and we like to play schmup or anything boss rush a lot, and so we did just that. Its a boss rush game, consisting of monsters from the arcade/retro theme.

For us, using low poly assets to populate the game's world did a good job at highlighting how you can use that technique regardless of how blocky it is, to still deliver to the player good looking visuals and engagement to the world you've created.

But like most of the time we join these jams, we over scope and became ambitious in this mini game. hence we crammed up to the very last day just to submit, and I still feel like I could've done some more >_<.

But all in all, we learned that simple is still better and next time we'll build upon that learning and be better till next time.

pro tip: you can cheese the snake boss by hacking it on the center part instead of slashing it on the outer layer.
